William Zorach American, 1897- 1966 Tessim Drinking (Child Drinking), 1932 Signed Zorach on the right edge of the base; inscribed William Zorach/ Limited Edition/ Robinson Galleries, Inc. N.Y. (on the rear edge of the integral base) Mahogany 8 1/4 x 5 x 5 1/2 inches Provenance: Mrs. Thomas Shanahan, Brooklyn, NY Literature: Roberta Tarbell, Catalogue Raisonne of William Zorach's Carved Sculpture, University of Delaware, June 1976 (unpublished doctoral dissertation), pp. 385-6, no. 78 In her unpublished doctoral dissertation on William Zorach's carved sculpture, Roberta Tarbell notes that "Zorach modeled a clay version of Child Drinking, cast it in bronze, and had wood replicas made of it, of which this is the only one extant. This depiction of Tessim Zorach sitting on a blanket with a bib around his neck and a cup in his hand is similar in subject, size, and medium to Walking Baby by William Zorach and Crawling Baby by Marguerite Zorach, both modeled in 1918. "In 1957 Zorach stated, 'I never carved it [Child Drinking] in stone. I modeled it in clay from a drawing I made of my son, Tessim, when he was a baby and had it cast in bronze.' Later, in 1959, a marble version (cat. no. 86) was carved." Robinson Galleries (circa 1933 through circa 1943) was an innovative enterprise founded by George Robinson intended to foster the collection and appreciation of sculpture. Robinson commissioned artists to make multiple replicas of individual works of art which were then offered for sale at affordable prices at his gallery at 126 East 57 Street in New York City. Along with the artist's signature, these would be marked: "Limited Edition, Robinson Galleries Inc., New York." Sculptors involved in this enterprise included Jose de Creeft, Alice Decker, Franc Epping John Flannagan, Chaim Gross John Hovannes Margaret Brassler Kane Robert Laurent Hugo Robus Concetta Scaravaglione Louis Slobodkin, Marion Walton Warren Wheelock William Zorach and others. Tessim Drinking was one of several models Zorach sold through Robinson Galleries. C
