Slave narrative of prominent abolitionist and prolific author William Wells Brown. His later novel Clotel (1853) is considered the first novel written by an African American and he also became the first published African American playwright (1856). Scarce, OCLC locates 5 copies. Condition: Foxing, especially to frontispiece tissue guard, toning to pages. Bumped corners and wear to edges, spine slightly cocked. Pencil marking to p. 130. Some brown spots.
