The first, two pages of a folded sheet, integral leaf docketed, addressed to Lord John Russell written from Windsor, April 11: 1837. 7 1/8 x 4 5/8 inches (18 x 11.5 cm); twenty lines written in black ink, with docketing in another hand; the second also two pages of a folded sheet, integral leaf docketed, addressed to Lord John Russell written from St. James's Palace, July 13: 1835; eighteen lines written in black ink, with docketing in another hand. In the first, the King (writing in the third person) draws the attention of Lord Russell to the state of the militia of the United Kingdom, in light of the "Vixen" negotiations then in progress (the ship of that name had been seized and confiscated by the Russian government, a provocation leading to a major diplomatic flap). In the second, the king berates Russell regarding an appointment made without first getting the King's permission. C
