Beschreibung:

Lot of 2. Seward, William (1801-1872) DS as Secretary of State. Dated January 19, 1866, the document certifies that Robert Tyler took an oath. Seal intact. 8 x 10 in. Accompanied by trimmed page upon which William H. Seward pens, "Let me have a proof." Glued on by wax, the back of the paper has a newspaper clipping detailing the career of the leading American senator, Daniel Webster and his impact. Seward was the Secretary of State from 1861 to 1869, which might explain his interest in Webster. Condition: The scrapbook page has a large tear. The signature is dark but does bleed onto the recto of the piece. The newspaper clipping has some foxing on the margins. There are several folds. The papers concerning Robert Tyler has some large foxing spots on the back portion, but do not affect the text of the document. The ink is somewhat faded and smudged. The red seal is present, dark, and minimally damaged.
