William Golding, The Ladder and the Tree, privately printed limited edition, first state, signed by the author [Marlborough, Marlborough College Press, 1961] complete, woodblock frontispiece by J. Pritchard in black and white, title signed by the author, original printed blue wrappers, original staples oxidised leaving slight discolouration around spine, else a fine copy, small 8vo Geoski & Grogan note that Mrs Kempson [commissioner of work] recalls that only 20 or 30 copies were printed and that the printer John Randle recalls a figure closer to 100, printed exclusively for private distribution and none for sale (A7, p.14, William Golding, a Bibliography, 1994, A7, p.14). This is a work of extreme rarity, and often considered Golding's most scarce work.
