Thistle signed and dated "WCS 1974" l.r., flow pen on paper, sight size 11 7/16 x 8 3/8 in.; The Family signed and dated "William C Seitz '48" l.l., mixed media on paper mounted to paperboard, 20 x 13 in. Condition: Family with small loss to sheet at l.l. corner, framed without glass; Thistle not examined out of frame. Provenance: Ex collection Charles Parkhurst. William "Bill" Seitz is best known as an art historian, the first professor of modern art history at Princeton University, and curator of the Department of Painting and Sculpture Exhibitions, Museum of Modern Art, New York (1960-70). Seitz began his career as an artist, studying at the Albright Art School, the Art Institute of Buffalo, and earned a BFA from the University of Buffalo in 1948. In 1955 Seitz completed the first dissertation on Abstract Expressionism at Princeton University. Later he also taught at Brandeis University and was Director of the Rose Art Museum.
