Wilhelm Sasnal UFO 2002 Oil on canvas. 59 x 59 in. (149.9 x 149.9 cm). Signed and dated “Wilhelm Sasnal 2002” on the overlap.
Provenance Foskal Gallery, Warsaw Exhibited Porto, Museu Serralves - Museu de Arte Contemporânea, Havekost, Kahrs, Plessen, Sasnal - Imagens em Pintura, May 5 – July 9, 2006, p. 38 (illustrated) Literature B. Schwabsky, Vitamin P: New Perspectives in Painting, London / New York, 2002, p. 288 (illustrated Museu Serralves - Museu de Arte Contemporânea, ed., Havekost, Kahrs, Plessen, Sasnal - Imagens em Pintura, Portugal, 2006, p. 38 (illustrated) Catalogue Essay “The titles of Sasnal’s works are soberly direct: A Drug on White Saucer, Airport at Night, Black Thing, UFO with Date, Two Men Throwing Bombs from Balloon… but the images he produces –depicting everything from the domestic refrigerator to the nuclear threat –represent an intricate, physically and psychologically complex process of appropriation. Though he also produces films and comics, more frequently he uses the subjective medium of painting to depict objective fact, making the familiar eerie, and exploring the relationship between reality, imagination and representation.” “Whatever the original source material, his pictures are always disturbing and distracting, or perhaps even disappointing, somehow falling short of the familiar language we recognize from the deluge of media illustrations to which we are constantly exposed. His images create a gap in our perception that refuses to accept the interpretations we would normally attribute to them, even making them seem threatening through the subjectivity and intensity of his vision. In this way he returns these images to reality, and thus returns reality to the viewer.” (Beatrix Ruff, Creamed 3, Phaidon Press, London, p. 340) Read More
