WHITNEY ARCTIC EXPEDITION] Group of twelve pencil drawings depicting the hunting of Walrus and Musk-Ox. Circa 1910. Twelve pencil d... . Circa 1910. Twelve pencil drawings on paper mounted to boards, housed in two large frames, each frame with a contemporary pencil label reading "Hunting the Walrus/drawn by the Esquimo Pennypar" and "Hunting the Musk Ox/drawn by the Esquimo Pennypar." A few small spots or marks, clean overall. The lot sold with a first edition copy of Harry Whitney's Hunting with the Eskimos (New York: 1910). The present group of drawings, simple in form and scale, depict dramatic scenes of hunting walrus on the water and musk-ox on land. The simply articulated forms are attributed to Pennipar, an Eskimo guide on Whitney's expedition to the Arctic. Though unpublished, the drawings correspond to hunting scenes in the text and resemble drawings reproduced as small insets and chapter headings in the finished book. References to Pennipar are sprinkled throughout the text and Whitney reports:"Some of the Eskimos displayed a remarkable artistic instinct. One of them drew for me several excellent representations of animals, and reproduced incidents of the hunt. I had but to suggest and idea for a sketch, supply a pencil and paper, and in a few minutes a very well executed drawing would be produced. One man particularly had an excellent eye for proportion and perspective..." (p. 88). Chapters are devoted to the hunting of the walrus and musk ox in the text and the drawings can be matched to portions of the descriptions. C
