WHITELY, Henry (1817-1898). British Birds. Woolwich: George Miller Whitely (part III), 1847-1848. Part II and III only (of III), 12° (178 x 105mm). Engraved title with vignette in part II, letterpress title to part III. 2pp. of subscribers (1p. in each volume). 16 hand-coloured engraved plates by G.M.Whitely after Henry Whitely. Original green bubble-grain cloth, contemporary manuscript (ink on green paper) label on upper cover of part II (backstrips split, label removed from cover of part III). Provenance : Edward, 13th EARL OF DERBY (1775-1851, inscriptions and armorial bookplate). [ With :] a duplicate of part II. Provenance : Sir Thomas Maryon Wilson (armorial bookplate). All three parts contained within a a single green morocco box. FIRST EDITIONS. VERY RARE. The first part (on British Tits) was published in 1846, the second (on Finches) in 1847 (Lord Derby has inscribed his copy "from the Author March 30th. 1847") and part III (also on Finches) in 1848 (Derby copy dated "Decr. 1848"). The subscribers were limited to 44 in part II and 51 in part III (Lord Derby appears on both lists, indeed, he subscribed to 5 copies of part III). In addition to painting birds Henry Whitely was also a taxidermist and curator of the Royal Artillery Museum at Woolwich. (3)
