An extensive archive of documents, personal letters, ships' manifests, ledgers, crew lists, consulate certificates, and other papers, most concerning the whaler "Richmond," others the "Sheffield" and the "Monmouth," all sailing from Cold Spring, written by, to or concerning several seamen including James Le Retilley ("alias James Martin," lost overboard in high seas), Peter Martin Philander Winters, Jeremiah Ludlow, John H. Jones, et al; various places including Honolulu, Bahia, Hobart-town, Lahaina (Hawaii), New London, New York, various dates, ca.1835-1855 (most 1840s).

Extensive papers of an unidentified mariner who served on several whaling vessels 1843-1849, featuring records of the ill-fated last voyage of the whaler "Richmond," abandoned by its dying Captain, Philander Winters, in the Bering Straits, 2 August 1849. Fully equipped and crewed, the ship had sailed from Sag Harbor on 15 July 1846, bound for the Pacific and arctic whaling grounds. It rounded Cape Horn, landing at the Cape Verde islands, Bahia (October 1846), Hobart-town, Tasmania After a second sojourn in Honolulu (October 1848), the "Richmond" sailed for rich arctic whaling grounds. In the Bering straits, the "Richmond" ran aground and had to be abandoned. Several nearby whalers rescued the crew. Under duress, Captain Winters sold the cargo of the "Richmond" (800 barrels of oil and a quantity of whalebone) to two other whalers. When they returned to Sag Harbor, this rescued cargo was offered for sale. The "Richmond's" investors filed suit in a significant case decided by the Supreme Court as Post v.
