WESTERN ASIATIC CYLINDER SEAL WITH HEROES AND BEASTS 28th-26th century BC A small carved lapis lazuli cylinder seal with frieze of heroes fighting beasts; accompanied by a museum-quality impression and typed and signed scholarly note issued by W.G. Lambert, late Professor of Assyriology, University of Birmingham, 1970-1993, which states: "Cylinder Seal of Lapis Lazuli 13.5 x 11 mm. A contest scene is shown. There is a hero at each end of the scene, both wearing garments of birds' feathers that hang down over one leg, and each is grappling with a quadruped, striking it with a weapon. The animal on the right is a rearing lion, and on the left a horned quadruped. This is a seal from west Iran, c. 2800-2600 B.C. It is nicely engraved and in very good condition." 3.04 grams, 13mm (1/2"). Very fine condition. Provenance Property of a London gentleman; aquired in the late 1970s and 1980s.
