WELLES, ORSON Heavily annotated script for the 1938 Mercury Theatre production The Shoemaker's Holiday . New York: circa December 1937/January 1938. An approximately 89 page typed script heavily annotated in pencil and occasionally in crayon with text changes and stage directions often on the verso of the preceding sheet, the left margin with three-hole punches. 11 x 8 1/2 inches (28.5 x 22 cm). The script quite worn with dampstains and losses, this worst at first and last leaves which do have some losses to text, rust stains and burn holes from paperclips throughout, etc. The Shoemaker's Holiday was the second staged production of Orson Welles' and John Houseman's Mercury Theatre. The current script is likely the only working script from the show to survive. The script bears annotations and stage direction in Welles' hand to virtually every page although a second hand may have added some text at end. A 2008 letter included in the lot reports that this script was found among many Mercury Theatre related papers, ledgers, and correspondence at a Connecticut flea market in 2004. This script is not only a rare survival of one of Welles' first professional performances as a director but also great window into his early working method in advance of the War of the Worlds broadcast later in 1938 and, of course, his cinematic masterpiece Citizen Kane.
