WEIZMANN, Chaim (1874-1952), President of Israel . Large photograph inscribed and signed ("Ch. Weizmann"). 14 x 11in., with margins, inscribed and signed on the lower margin . With accompanying cover letter dated 22 June 1949 from Henry Motor to Felix Diamond enclosing the photo. "THE FIRST ANNIVERSARY OF ISRAEL." A fine photographic portrait of Israel's first president, inscribed and signed: "To Felix Diamond, In appreciation of devoted service and leadership in behalf of the United Jewish Appeal. Ch. Weizmann, May 4, 1949, The First Anniversary of Israel." No nation was more important to the successful establishment of the state of Israel in 1948 than the American government, whose President Harry S. Truman provided swift and unequivocal recognition of Israel, over the protests of many of his pro-Arab foreign policy advisors. And few groups within the United States were as important in sustaining America's support of Israel than the United Jewish Appeal. Here Weizmann thanks a key UJA supporter, and the accompanying cover letter from the Appeal's director, Henry Montor, tells Diamond that Weizmann "wished to leave behind a momento of his appreciation to that group of leaders in the United States who, through their devotion, labor and vision, symbolized the desire of American Jewry..."
