WEBSTER, DANIEL. Autograph letter signed ("Daniel Webster") to "My dear Son." Washington, 8 February 1847. One 8vo sheet, folded to make four pages; text on recto and verso of first two pages; folded for mailing; small chip to bottom vertical divide of letter, not affecting text; some light browning. Signed again "D. Webster" in corner of last, otherwise blank, page . Webster, then a U.S. Senator for Massachusetts, defends fellow Senator Jefferson Davis, representative for Mississippi, over an amendment concerning the issue of secession. (Webster, annoyed by militant intransigence of the Abolitionists, then passively supported secession as a compromise measure. He would come out strongly against disunion three years later.): "...Although I take no part, of course, nor wish to express any preference... in regard to the pending election of a Senator, yet learning that some members of the Legislature express dissatisfaction with Mr. Davis' conduct...I feel it my duty to say, that I feel as if injustice might be done to Mr. Davis in that respect...I wish you to make the contents of this known to the members of the Legislature, as I feel bound in duty to relieve Mr. Davis from any unfavorable inference which may be entertained through mistake or misinformation."
