WAUGH, EVELYN. Helena, a Novel. London: Chapman & Hall 1950. Large 8vo, original white buckram, uncut, spine slightly darkened, sides a trifle soiled, half morocco slipcase . FIRST EDITION, one of 50 special large-paper copies on hand-made paper for the author's personal use and private distribution, PRESENTATION COPY, inscribed by the author to his American editor on front free endpaper: "For Anne Ford a souvenir of Stinchcombe [Waugh's home], October 3rd, 1950, from Evelyn Waugh." Laid in: (1) Snapshot photograph of Waugh, captioned in an unidentified hand on verso: "...taken by Anne Ford when she was a week-end guest of Waugh's on Oct. 3, 1950"; (2) Photograph of Waugh's last home, the Georgian house Piers Court in Gloucestershire; (3) Photocopy of a typed letter signed by Chapman & Hall to the bookseller Frank Hollings, 17 December 1953: "...we produced 50 copies of the large paper edition of Helena for the author's personal use and distribution and no copies were put on the market." In very good condition for this book.
