WATERHOUSE, Benjamin (1754-1846). A prospect of exterminating the small-pox; being the history of the variolae vaccinae, or kine-pox, commonly called the cow-pox; [Vol. II: A prospect ... part II, being a continuation of a narrative of facts concerning the progress of the new innoculation in America; together with practical observations on the local appearance, symptoms, and mode of treating the variola vaccina ]. Cambridge: for the author at the University Press, by William Hilliard, 1800 (Vol. 2, 1802). 2 volumes. 8 o (199 x 114 mm [Vol. 1]; 193 x 118 mm [Vol. 2]. (Vol. 2 browned and spotted, small tear to vol. 2 title leaf.) Modern cloth [Vol. 1]; later quarter blue calf, marbled boards (edges worn) [Vol. 2]. Provenance : Surgeon General's Office Library (bookplate, NLM withdrawal stamp); "Savannah, Georgia, 1802" (illegible inscription); Army Medical Library, Cleveland Branch (bookplate, Vol. 2). FIRST EDITION. Waterhouse learnt of Jenner's discoveries of a cowpox vaccination against smallpox in 1800, and after six weeks of successful trials (starting with his own children and servants), published his first report (Vol. 1). The vaccination was immediately very popular, but was often administered incorrectly, despite Waterhouse's warnings and instructions, and led to an outbreak of smallpox, for which Waterhouse was blamed. In 1802, the Boston Board of Health cleared Waterhouse's name and declared "cow-pox is a complete security against the small-pox". In Part II Waterhouse proclaimed the efficiacy of the vaccination and gave instructions for its correct use. Austin 2012-2013; Garrison-Morton 5424; HFN 2187. (2)
