THE ELECTION OF THE FIRST PRESIDENT AND VICE-PRESIDENT IS ANNOUNCED Column 1 on page 2 announces the results of the first Federal election under the new Constitution. The electors represented 10 of the 11 states that had so far ratified the new Constitution. "Yesterday the Honorable the Congress of the United States having a quorum of both houses, preceded to business." The Senate named John Langdon of New Hampshire as Speaker, "for the purpose of opening and counting the votes for President and Vice-President of the Senate." On the important occasion, "the House of Representatives attended in the Senate chamber. When tallied, "the whole number of suffrages was 69." This included 9 votes for John Jay, 6 for Richard Harrison 6 for John Rutledge, 4 for John Hancock 3 for George Clinton, 2 for Samuel Huntington, 2 for John Milton and one each for James Armstrong Benjamin Lincoln and Edward Telfair. With 69 and 34 votes respectively, "The illustrious George Washington Esquire was then announced President of the Unites States of America, and his Excellency John Adams Vice President." That the election chose Washington to lead the new U.S. government was a surprise to no one. This notice in the Daily Advertiser , the day after the election is PERHAPS THE FIRST PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE FIRST ELECTION RESULTS.
