Condition: Restoration to losses in the upper margin just touching the image, other repaired tears, two small filled abrasions in the image. Matted. an important allegorical portrait of washington by a celebrated early american engraver. A lovely example of a Washington apotheosis print, depicting a large memorial to the deceased Founding Father, with a central oval portrait surrounded by cherubs, including one blowing a trumpet adorned with a flag citing Washington's military achievements at Trenton, Princetown, Monmouth and Yorktown, with a weeping Lady Liberty and American soldier in the foreground. Enoch Gridley worked in both line and stipple manner, and earned a reputation as a talented and accurate engraver. He established himself in New York in 1803 but later moved to Philadelphia where he produced a number of fine portraits for local publishers. This copy the first state of two known issues.
