Document signed (“Go: Washington”) as Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army, “Head-Quarters”, 12 June 1783, countersigned by John TRUMBULL (1740-1809) (“J Trumbull Sec”), as General Secretary. 1 page, (300 x 235 mm.), bottom margin trimmed, else very good. George Washington grants a furlough and conditional discharge to a member of the light dragoons—an unusually clean and attractive example. Washington grants a conditional discharge to “Jerod Hummingston Private in the 2d Regt Lt Drag[oons] … having faithfully served the United States Three Years and being inlisted for the War only, is hereby Discharged from the American Army.” A codicil on the verso, bearing the same date, notes that “THE within CERTIFICATE shall not avail the Bearer as a Discharge, until the Ratification of the definitive Treaty of Peace; previous to which Time, and until Proclamation thereof shall be made, He is to be considered as being on Furlough. GEORGE WASHINGTON.
