A RARE FULL WASHINGTON SIGNATURE AND A SHOPPING LIST FOR HIS NEW MOTHER-IN-LAW Washington sends this "Invoice of Sundries to be shipped by Rob t Cary Esq r . & Comp. for Mrs. Frances Dandridge, York River, but charg'd to the Acct. of George Washington." He then lists eleven items along with directions about their packing and shipment. It includes: "1 p r . of handsome purple and white Calico...6 yards fashionable grave Ribbon, 6 purple & white printed Cambrick pocket Handkerchiefs, 1 p r . black Sattin Shoes--small sixes, 2 p r . Woman's kid Gloves, 2 p r . Ditto Mitts." Washington directs that "the above Goods...be packed in a small Trunk and Consigned to the above Lady (living on York River) with Invoice and Cost, a Copy of which to be sent also to: G: o Washington." Mrs. Dandridge (1710-1785) was born Francis Jones in York County, and married John Dandridge in 1730. He died in 1756. On 6 January 1759, George Washington became her son-in-law. These purchases were part of a flurry of transactions Washington carried out at this time to gratify the creature comforts of his new family which, in addition to Mrs. Dandridge, included two small step-children from Martha Washington's first marriage: John Parke ("Jacky") Custis and Martha Parke ("Patsy") Custis. Other invoices on this date included purchases for the children of toys, violins, "tuckers," "bibs" and "aprons." On this same date Washington wrote his brother from Mount Vernon to say that "I am now...fixd at this Seat with an agreeable Consort for Life and hope to find more happiness in retirement than I ever experienced amidst a wide and bustling World" (quoted in Abbot, ed., Papers of George Washington , Colonial Series, 6: 359). Robert Cary & Co. was the English factor that Washington used not only to import these consumer goods, but to sell his tobacco crops. Published in Fitzpatrick 2:336.
