Collation: A 2 (1 sheet: A 1r title, A 1v coat-of-arms, A 2r equestrian portrait, A 2v 'Vorrede') A 4 (2 sheets, A3r-A6v text) B 4 (2 sheets, B1r-B4v text + 1 folding woodcut sheet) C 2 (1 sheet, C1r-C2v text + 2 folding woodcut sheets) D 4 (2 sheets, D1r-D4v text + 2 folding woodcut sheets joined) E 2 (1 sheet, E1r-E2r text and colophon + 2 folding woodcut sheets joined). Fraktur type. Full-page woodcut coat-of-arms and equestrian portrait of Frederick II by Michael Ostendorfer both hand-coloured and heightened with gold in a contemporary hand, 5 folding woodcut plates, 3 double-page width and 2 quadruple-page width. (Variable light spotting and browning, heavier on first 2 leaves, unobtrusive worming affecting text on one leaf and image on 2 plates, one plate trimmed at head affecting numeral, 2 close-bound at left-hand margins, 3 with tears neatly repaired on the verso.) 20th-century vellum titled in ink on the upper board, slipcase (text leaves guarded in, slipcase worn with loss of spine). Provenance : 20th-century bookseller's description pencilled on upper pastedown, stating that no complete copy had been offered commercially since 1843. A RARE WORK DESCRIBING THE DEFEAT OF KASIM BEG BY FREDERICK II'S ARMIES, COLOURED BY A CONTEMPORARY HAND. Frederick, Elector Palatine of the Rhine (whose arms and portrait serve as frontispieces to the work), served as Reichfeldherr of Charles V's Hapsburg forces in the Ottoman sieges on Vienna in 1529 and 1532 during Suleiman I's successful campaigns in Hungary and then Austria. The text is derived from previously-published sources and illustrated with 5 large, folding woodcuts by Michael Ostendorfer (1490-1559). Ostendorfer (a student of Albrecht Altdorfer had moved from his native Regensburg to Neumarkt in 1536, and is recorded as court painter to Frederick II in 1539, the year the present work was published. No copy can be traced in Anglo-American book auction records since 1902 (and none in Jahrbuch der Auktionspreise für Bücher... since 1960). Göllner Turcica 650; Kertbeny Ungarn betreffende deutsche Erstlings-Drucke. 1454-1600 I, 527 (describing a folio edition published in Nuremberg in the same year under entry 526).
