Beschreibung:

3 ALsS written by 3 important historical figures from the state of Vermont. 1815 stampless ALS, Samuel Strong, head of the Vermont militia during the War of 1812, to the governor of New York state. 1p, Vergennes (VT), 8 Jan. 1815. Strong writes to the Governor about 4 months after the Battle of Plattsburgh (Battle of Lake Champlain), expressing his appreciation for "...a Resolution of the Legislature of the State of New York expressing the sense they entertain of the conduct of the men I had the good fortune to command on the late invasion of our Northern frontier by the Enemy." Charles Marsh ALS 1p, Washington (DC), 29 Dec. 1815, to Norman Williams of Woodstock,VT. With Marsh's "Free" franking above the address on this stampless letter. Written as member of the House of Representatives from Vermont, Marsh describes the difficulty in procuring land warrants for soldiers. Among the issues: "...it's a most troublesome and humbling business. The public offices are a mile & one half from the Capitol." He goes on to describe the complex process. Samuel Swift, 1826 ALS to Horatio Seymour regarding the sale of land in Vermont. Samuel Swift was a US Senator and a leading figure in the state. He was also involved with Middlebury College. He writes to Horatio Seymour, who was a lawyer in Middlebury, and a US Senator from Vermont. Condition: First with tear where the wax seal was. Moderate toning, but easily readable. The other two are better-than-average for letters of this age.e The second has a wax seal on verso, but the damage to the paper in opening is in the lower margin and does not appear to have impacted any text. Minor toning along the right margin and address area. Third is very good, but a bit difficult to read because the it is written on both sides of the page and the ink shadows from one side are visible on the other. Ink has not "burned" through, however.
