358 pp. Illustrated with 11 steel-engraved plates including frontispiece and one repeating plate before the title page. 18.8x11.5 cm (7¼x4½"), original gilt-decorated brown cloth, spine lettered in gilt. First Edition An unemployed New Englander, Welles embarked on a world tour with six friends, with hopes of a free ride for locating six paying passengers (the deal was reneged upon), traveling to South America, Mauritius, Australia and the gold camps, and Northern California, where he spent some time, particularly in the San Francisco area and at the gold diggings. Ex-libris stamp of East Haddam Public Library on rear pastedown. Welles came to California in 1854 and describes life in Sacramento, a trip from French Creek across the Sierra Nevadas to Carson Valley, experiences among the Mormon Refugees in Nevada, the Vigilance Committee, and "hints to travelers" on the climate and resources of California. "He counters refugees from Utah in 1853: Mormons who had escaped after being robbed of all possessions, p. 296-298" - Flake 9678; Cowan p. 674; Hill p. 322-23; Howes W239.
