Walton and instructions how to angle for a trout or grayling in a clear stream by.. Cotton With original memoirs and notes by Sir Harris Nicolas. London: Charles Whittingham for William Pickering, 1836. 2 volumes extended to 12, large 2° (520 x 372mm). 4° text inlaid to size, 12 specially printed additional letterpress volume titles in red and black to size, otherwise text and plates mounted to size throughout. Engraved portraits, frontispiece and plates after Stothard, Inskipp and others, EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED with approximately 1400 portraits, views, plates, original watercolours, autograph letters, printed pamphlets and broadsides. Near-contemporary brown morocco gilt, covers panelled in gilt, spines in six compartments with raised bands, lettered in the second, third and fourth compartments, the others panelled, gilt, turn-ins, gilt edges (light scuffing to extrremities, the foot of the spine of the first volume with old damp damage). AN EXCEPTIONAL AND EXTRAORDINARY COMPILATION, assembled by A.A.W[eston] between 1864 and 1868. Based on what Westwood and Satchell call 'One of the handsomest publications of modern times', the work has been extended in both size and format to include about 43 original watercolour or wash drawings, 21 autograph items, 128 sporting prints, 100 fish plates (31 coloured), 15 coloured bird plates, 351 portraits, 462 views, 310 general prints and 8 pamphlets or broadsides.
