WAGHENAER, Lucas Janszoon (1533/4-1610). Pars Prima. Speculum nauticum super navigatione maris Occidentalis conspectus . - Pars Altera. Speculum marini, integram cum borealis, tum orientalis oceani navigationem . Antwerp: Jean Bellère, 1591. Two parts in one, 2 o (413 x 280 mm). Two engraved titles with printed Latin titles on slips pasted over Spanish titles (see note), engraved chart with volvelle on B3 and 47 charts (first folding chart with upper and lower borders trimmed away and some edgewear, maps 5, *XIX and 30 with small burn-holes, map 6 with losses in lower margin renewed just touching border, map 9 with two repaired tears in upper right crossing text and image, maps 10 and 13 partially split along fold, maps 19, 38, 39, 40, 45 and 56 with small tears at fold affecting image, map 24 a bit soiled and worn along fold, map 43 loose, some occasional worming within images at beginning and end). Contemporary blind-tooled calf, floral cornerpieces, covers with central arabesque, edges gilt and gauffered (rebacked with text reinserted on new guards, some rubbing). A fine collection of charts of Northern Europe. Waghenaer had started his working life at sea, and knew the requirements of pilots and seamen. In 1591 he published his Thresoor der Zeevaerdt , a small pocket-sized "rutter" with detailed text and coast-profiles, which was more useful for practical purposes. The charts of the Speculum were a useful supplement to this. The work was first published in 1584-85 with Dutch text, and due to its popularity a number of editions followed, with text in Dutch or Latin. In 1589, a Royal Privilege was granted to Jean Bellère and in 1591 a patent for the work passed to Cornelis Claesz. This edition, like others of the time, has the Latin title supplied on a printed slip pasted on to the Spanish title. The translator is not mentioned, but Richard Slotboom is credited with providing the geographical additions on the versos of the charts. Although this edition bears the date of 1591, it contains the new chart of Europe dated 1592. According to Koeman, all editions published after 1588 have engraved numbers on the plates, and the plates appear to be a bit worn. All editions of Waghenaer's atlas are scarce. Koeman IV. Wag 9A.
