Waagen (Dr. Gustav F.) Works of Art and Artists in England, 3 vol., first English edition, 1838; Treasures of Art in Great Britain, 4 vol. including supplement 'Galleries and Cabinets of Art in Great Britain', vol.1-3 ex-library copies with stamps & labels and some leaves becoming loose, original cloth, rubbed or worn, 1854-57 § Graves (Algernon) Summary of and Index to Waagen, facsimile reprint, original cloth, 1912 [1970] § Passavant (J.D.) Tour of a German Artist in England, with Notices of Private Galleries and Remarks on the state of art, 2 vol., plates (browned), some folding, frontispiece of vol.1 creased at corner, 1836, the first and last uniformly bound in contemporary half red roan, spines gilt, g.e., rubbed; and another by Waagen, 8vo et infra (11) ⁂ Pioneering and invaluable record of the wealth and provenance of art treasures in public and private collections in England in the early nineteenth century. Waagen (1794-1868) was the Director of the Berlin Royal Museum and a respected art historian and connoisseur. Passavant had toured England a few years earlier as preparation for his study of Raphael. "Dr Waagen's encyclopaedic survey of art in England is the most important single work available to us in the history of collecting. Works of Art in England was written as thirty long letters in 1835 and was first published in German. It was translated by H.E.Lloyd. The 1854 edition, which was revised so extensively as to be virtually a new book, was translated by Lady Eastlake. So was the 1857 supplement." The English as Collectors, p.425. Frank Herrmann's wife, Patricia, recalls the time "when Frank decided it would be a good idea to follow in the footsteps of Waagen. I spent countless hours arranging weekends: routes, visits round great houses, hotels etc etc. I generally had to plead with housekeepers, bailiffs, librarians and archivists to wangle permission, but looking back on it, I think most must have said to their ultimate titled bosses 'there's an odd cove coming on Sunday morning, but he seems to know more about the collection than I do' because very often the various earls, dukes and barons appeared and once they got talking to Frank, the day's timetable was wrecked. On one occasion, ladders were fetched so that Frank really could follow Waagen up to the spot near a ceiling where he (Waagen) had pronounced the second canvas along to be a Rembrandt ....".
