Voyages to the New World Columbus, Vespucci, et al, c.1515-1523 [FRACANZANO DE MONTALBODDO, Antonio (fl. 1507-1522).] Sensuyt le Nouveau Monde & navigations: faites par Emeric de Vespuce Florentin ... Translated by Mathurin de Redouer. Paris: [Veuve de Jean Trepperel] c.1515-1523. Exceedingly rare early French edition of the most important compendium of the Age of Discovery, including accounts of all three Columbus voyages plus those of Vespucci, Vasco da Gama, and others. Fracanzano's famous compilation is one of the most important collections of voyages ever printed, even called by Penrose, "one of the most influential books ever published" (Travel & Discovery p.277). His book was seminal firstly for taking a global approach: putting the Age of Discovery in a larger, geopolitical context. Secondly, this work reached a much larger audience than the individual news accounts (such as the Columbus letters) by means of numerous vernacular translations—all of which are now extremely rare. The book was a primary vehicle for how the merchant and intellectual classes encountered the Age of Discovery, as distinct from the political and aristocratic audience of the individual accounts. Later 16th-century travel anthologies such as Ramusio, Hakluyt, Purchas, etc, all owe a profound debt to Fracanzano. First printed in Italian in Vicenza in 1507 as Paesi novamente retrovati, the work was translated into Latin by the Milanese monk, Archangelo Madrignano, and reprinted the following year. In addition to the accounts of the exploration in the Americas, it contains important accounts of voyages in the Eastern Hemisphere. The book was published in the 16th-century in several editions, and was "the most important vehicle for the dissemination throughout Renaissance Europe of the news of the great discoveries both in the east and the west" (PMM). The major voyages are: The first three voyages of Columbus, 1492-1500; the third voyage of Vespucci, 1501-1502 (to Brazil); Pedro Alvares Cabral's discovery of the Brazilian, Guianaian and Venezuelan coasts in 1500-1501; Alvise da Cadamosto's explorations along the West African coast in 1456; Vasco da Gama's explorations of Africa and India in 1497-99, which "opened the way for the maritime invasion of the east by Europe" (PMM); and many others. Montalboddo's work is the first to publish the two letters by Girolamo Seringi on Vasco da Gama's voyage to India. The French translation is the earliest account in this language of Columbus's second and third voyages. There were a few early publishers of this work in French, the others being Jean Janot (who became the partner of Trepperel's widow) and Galliot du Pré. The latter produced the probable first French edition dated 1516 (but 1517). Surviving copies in any French edition are very rare. We locate no copies of any early French edition in the auction records of RBH or ABPC. Harrisse 83; Alden 515/8; Brunet V, 1159; see Borba de Moraes, pp. 582-583, PMM 42, Rodrigues 1295. Quarto (177 x 120mm). Title printed in red and black and with large woodcut celestial roundel, criblé initials (some minor marginal staining, leaves of final gathering t with small corner repairs including some letters or words supplied in facsimile, a very few wormholes catching a few letters). 18th-century mottled calf, spine gilt (a little neat repair); custom morocco clamshell box. Provenance: four pages with contemporary marginalia – P. Laboureau (ownership inscription to title).
