In diagonaler Anordnung sowie subtiler Farbgebung und Lichtführung präsentiert Elias Vonck ein Arrangement aus erlegtem Federwild, darunter eine an ihrer Kralle befestigte Rohrdommel. Neben dem einzelgängerischen Nachtvogel liegen ein Moorhuhn, ein Rebhuhn und ein Buchfink auf dem Tisch. Das Rebhuhnfleisch galt insbesondere im Kontext mittelalterlicher und barocker Esstraditionen aufgrund seiner aphrodisierenden Wirkung als Köstlichkeit. Die leblosen Vögel stehen jedoch nicht nur für kulinarische Höhenflüge von anno dazumal, sondern lassen sich auch als Memento mori mit dem von Vonck stets intendierten Vanitas-Motiv in Verbindung bringen. Namentlich die in der Literatur mit dem christlich-mythologischen Symbol des Pelikans oft gleichgestellte Rohrdommel dürfte hier stellvertretend für die Passion Christi stehen. The genre of still lives with game reached its heyday in the decades following its establishment in the northern parts of the Netherlands in the early 1640ies. The undated work by Elias Vonck on offer here ranks among the earliest specimens of dutch animal still lives. The beholder is introduced to an arrangement in diagonal succession and subtle colouring depicting hunted game birds, in which a bittern suspended at its claws constitutes the centre of attention. Alongside the solitary nocturnal bird as protagonist, one encounters several other game birds on the table top, amongst them a grouse, a partridge and a chaffinch. Partridge in particular was considered a special delicacy in the medieval and baroque context owing to its alleged use as an aphrodisiac. The lifeless birds not only reflect the culinary fancy of the time but can also be interpreted as memento mori related to Vonck’s ever-present motive of vanity: The bittern, traditionally associated and equated with the pelican according to Christian mythological symbolism, may represent the Passion of Christ.
