First part with 80 lithographed maps, hand-colored in outline, and 2 lithographed plates showing the solar system and an astrological chart (not colored); second part (supplement) with 40 lithographed maps hand-colored in outline (1 is folding). (Oblong folio) 14½x17½, original quarter green morocco and cloth, front cover stamped in gilt. Berghaus' scarce Hand-Atlas of the world, plus the supplement volume bound-in. Chief atlas portion contains maps primarily of European countries, plus Asia, Africa, North and South America and Australia. The supplement (dated 1855) title page/contents in back calls for only 32 maps, which had included Texas, but this copy lacks that map. However, it does contain more maps of Africa and the Americas, including various portions of the U.S. such as: the Pacific Northwest, the Northern Atlantic and middle states, the Southern states, and the Southwest showing the southern portions of California, an extended Nevada, all of New Mexico which consumes all of present-day Arizona and a portion of Colorado, and most of Texas. Lot Amendments Condition: Large chips and tears along spine, corners worn, moisture wear mostly to rear cover and upper front cover; binding shaken, a few map plates detached and laid in, foxing, occasional marginal dampstains and other light wear; else very good overall.
