Engraved frontispiece and 46 plates (frontispiece quite spotted, other plates with one or two spots). (Some spotting and staining.) Contemporary green linen-backed marbled paper boards, contemporary manuscript paper labels on the front covers, uncut (boards worn and lightly soiled and nearly detached on volume one, spines chipped). Provenance : One or two corrections to text in a contemporary hand; 19th-century penciled annotations in some plate margins and on fig. LXI. FIRST EDITION of volume two, reissue of the sheets of volume one which was first issued in 1771. With the slip "James Newton..." pasted over the names of the booksellers in the imprint of both volumes, plates unnumbered in both volumes, the Preface and plates in volume one are printed on slightly smaller leaves (485 x 345 mm). Contemporary half calf, marbled boards, spine gilt (head of spine torn, front hinge cracked, rear joint starting, some rubbing at extremities). First edition of William Wilkins' translation of Books III-VI on civil architecture. Though the title-page of this edition is dated 1812, the plates in sections I-IV are dated 1813, 1814, and 1817.
