Border repeated to enclose 10 full-page woodcut illustrations of the life of Christ. 33 small woodcuts most with criblé background, including 6 repeats, illustrating the Passion, spaces for initials, with guide letters left blank. (Name cut from title affecting one line of text, small portion of blank upper margin of title cut away, paper flaw in blank margin of D1 repaired.) Contemporary Italian morocco-backed wooden boards, stamped in blind with knotwork lozenge within compartments, three (of 4) original leather clasps (rubbed, lower wooden board partly renewed, joints repaired, 15th-century manuscript vellum flyleaves. Provenance : Early-16th-century marginal Italian annotations in ink throughout; 16th-century ownership inscription of the Dominican Monastery of St. Adalbert in Breslau on title; Albert Ehrman (Broxbourne Library sale, Sotheby's 14 November 1977, lot 162). FIRST EDITION. Soncino's press was the first at Fano, and this is his finest book. The artist who signs his name 'F.V.' (on the last plate) has tentatively been identified as Florio Vavassore.
