Hugo is probably best known in America for his novels, Les Miserables and The Hunchback of Notre-Dame. He is best known in France as a poet. His work was so filled with sarcasm and social criticism, that he had to flee France and go to Brussels after a coup in 1851. He returned to France in 1870 and lived the remainder of his life in Paris. He was so beloved in France, that the street he lived on was renamed for him on his 80th birthday.
