Beschreibung:

.38 Colt caliber, 2.25" barrels, S/N 12027 & 12030 (mfg. ca 1880). Nickel finish, fire blued small parts, mother-of-pearl two-piece grips. Five-shot cylinders with long flutes, cylinder locking notches on their rear faces and London commercial proofs in the flutes. Left sides of barrels with etched panel COLT NEW 38. Tops of barrels roll marked in three lines: COLT'S PT. F. ARMS MFG. Co / HARTFORD CT U.S.A. / DEPOT 14 PALL MALL LONDON. Bottom of barrels with serial numbers and PAT. SEPT 15, 1874 markings. Both revolvers engraved with nearly full coverage in the 'New York' style of L.D. Nimschke usually seen on Colt SAA's shipped 'soft' to Hartley and Graham, consisting of a combination of flowing foliate scrolls with punch dot shading, feathery arabesque swirls and intertwined geometric lines and patterns. Matching serial numbers throughout, including the grips which are pencil numbered to the guns on their interiors. The revolvers are contained in a lovely miniature leather trunk style French-fitted case with a dark blue velvet interior and a lovely paper Cogswell & Harrison retailers label in the lid. The brown leather case features simple embossed line decorations and patterns, with profusely engraved gilt brass corner mounts, locking plate and circular escutcheon. The initials S.G.H. are embossed on the lid in gold leaf in Old English font. The casing contains a small pewter oiler and a gilt key engraved to match the furniture of the casing. The slot for a cleaning rod is empty. A really exquisite pair of English retailed late production fully engraved, etched panel New Line 38 revolvers in a wonderful retailer casing. Factory engraved as confirmed by Colt factory letter, the decoration on these splendid New Lines is likely by Colt master engraver Cuno Helfricht as they exhibit his characteristic starburst on the barrel lugs. Condition: Very good. Both revolvers retain much of their nickel finish with minor loss due to flaking and age. All markings and engraving remain quite clear, except for the patent date on the bottom of the barrel of #12027. Here, some scattered impact marks have partially obscured the marking. Both revolvers retain much of their fire blued finish on the hammers and small parts, although some screws and the cylinder pins show moderate fading and loss. #12027 has a crisp action with a fine bore. #12030 has a very weak mainspring. Both grips with some very minute chipping at the frame junction, otherwise showing good age and some light handling. Oiler and key very good to fine. Casing about very good to fine, showing some surface scuffs and loss of gilt finish on the exterior and fading and some wear to the velvet on the interior. As the iconic set belonging to General Hawley, head of the Philadelphia Centennial Commission, is not available this set will delight any New Line or Colt collector.
