Large woodcut illustration on title and approximately 210 other woodcuts, some full-page and one double-page, by the Late Master of the Grüninger Worsksop. (Small repaired hole on title with one letter retouched, small stains on H5 and 2N2, tears crossing text on I1 and 2L4, wormholes from 2c8 to end, marginal tape repair to 2e1, last leaf frayed along gutter, some occasional browning and soiling.) Contemporary German blind-tooled calf over wooden boards (old rebacking, clasps lacking). Provenance : early name effaced on title, some marginalia in an early hand; Prince Liechtenstein (bookplate); purchased from Emil Offenbacher, 22 October 1953. FIRST ILLUSTRATED EDITION OF VIRGIL. One of the great German woodcut books of the Renaissance, the masterpiece of the artist known as the Late Master of the Grüninger Workshop. Sebastian Brant was commissioned by the publisher to edit the work and based his commentary on that of Cristoforo Landino, adding several poems not in earlier editions of Virgil.
