Bound as a matched set in early 19th-century red straight-grained morocco gilt, covers with decorative border of fillets and stylised foliage roll, the large central panel with elaborate fan-shaped cornerpieces made up from various small tools including a distinctive head-of-barley tool, the spines in six compartments with double raised bands with onlaid black morocco strips between, the second compartment with green morocco lettering-piece, the fourth with 'volume number' I or II on onlaid black morocco roundels with surrounding small tools and pointill work, the other compartments with repeat decoration of small onlaid black morocco roundels surrounded by small tools and pointill work, gilt turn-ins with greek-key border, g.e. (light scuffing to upper joints). VERY FINE COPIES OF THE FIRST EDITIONS of Martyn's "highly esteemed" versions. The bindings date to around 1800 and are possibly by Christian Kalthoeber.
