VERDI, Giuseppe (1813-1901). AUTOGRAPH MANUSCRIPT SIGNED OF SCENA ED ARIA FOR ROLANDO FROM LA BATTAGLIA DI LEGNANO , scored for first and second violins, viola, clarinet, two voice parts, violoncelli and bass, black ink, 2 pages, 8 bars, one system on 20 staves per page, folio (345 x 262mm.), mounted with extended margins, bound in half morocco with gilt title This manuscript score gives the start of scene 8 from La battaglia di Legnano . According to Julian Budden, this is not a sketch but the first page of a fully scored 'scena ed aria' for Rolando which Verdi evidently replaced at a later stage by the definitive 'Se al nuovo di pugnando.' (Julian Budden, Opera , July 1989, p.891). Only the first page of this manuscript has been published in George Martin Aspects of Verdi , Robson Books, 1989. p. . The manuscript presumably dates from 1848. La battaglia di Legnano was first performed in Rome on 27 January 1849. The opera was Verdi's most overtly patriotic work.
