According to Julian Budden, this is not a sketch but the first page of a fully scored 'scena ed aria' for Rolando which Verdi evidently replaced at a later stage by the definitive 'Se al nuovo di pugnando.' (Julian Budden, Opera , July 1989, p.891). Only the first page of this manuscript has been published in George Martin Aspects of Verdi , Robson Books, 1989. p. . The manuscript presumably dates from 1848. La battaglia di Legnano was first performed in Rome on 27 January 1849. The opera was Verdi's most overtly patriotic work.
