VENICE]. Vües des Palais, Batimens celebres, Places, Mascarades, et Autres Beautés Singulieres de la Ville de Vénise . Leiden: Cornelis Haak, 1762.
VENICE]. Vües des Palais, Batimens celebres, Places, Mascarades, et Autres Beautés Singulieres de la Ville de Vénise . Leiden: Cornelis Haak, 1762. 2 o (394 x 273 mm). Engraved title and additional title, the former within engraved border, the additional title in architectural style by H. Eland after J,. Goeree; one folding plan of Venice and one large folding perspective view of the town on two sheets, both by Pieter vander Aa; 114 double-page engraved views, each captioned in Italian, Latin and French (some very light occasional marginal soiling). 18th-century sprinkled calf, paneled spine gilt (some light rubbing). FIRST EDITION OF THIS VERY FINE SERIES OF VIEWS. A classic example of vedutismo : setting the landscapes horizontally, together with a slightly elevated point-of-view. Although prominent works in the genre had already been produced by the first third of the century (in fact many of the subjects here had appeared in Pieter vander Aa's very rare collection La galerie agreeable du monde in 1729), the 1750-60s saw a remarkable increase in the diffusion of views of Venice, promoted by the international success and fame reached by Canaletto's paintings. The views also show the change in taste: they now depict scenes from everyday life. Graesse VI: 404.
