Maria Immaculate Concepta libri quinque, 1st edition, Valladolid: Bartolomé Portolés de la Torre, 1653, engraved title-page by Marcos Orozco (loose, frayed, minor worming), browning, marginal worming throughout, repair to final leaf, contemporary limp vellum, manuscript spine-title, inner hinges broken, rear inner hinge held by cords, folio in 6s (29.5 x 21.5 cm), together with Mariana (Juan de), Historia general de España ... nuevamente añadida en esta ultima impression todo lo suecedido desde el año de mil y seiscientos y cincuenta, hasta el desesenta y nueve, 2 volumes, Madrid: for Andres Garcia de la Iglesia, 1669, half-titles, title-pages printed in red and black, engraved portrait to dedication leaf of each volume, browning, intermittent minor damp-staining (largely restricted to margins), volume 1 half-title loose, marginal repair to leaf [par.]2 affecting catchword, contemporary sheep, blind arabesque border to sides, rubbed and worn, volume 1 spine defective, folio (30 x 21 cm), and Royal Spanish Academy, Diccionario de la lengua castellana, reducido á un tomo para su mas fácil uso, 4th edition, Madrid: widow of Don Joaquin Ibarra, 1803, half-title, contemporary sheep, rubbed and worn, folio (30.6 x 21.2 cm) (Qty: 4) The first item has recently been described as 'one of the most important books on the Immaculate Conception in the middle of the seventeenth century' (Enrique Llamas, 'The Concept of Redemption and Co-redemption During the "Golden Age" of Spanish Theology and Mariology', p.250, n.43, in Mary at the Foot of the Cross - VIII, 2008). It is nevertheless highly uncommon, Copac tracing two copies of another edition printed in Lyon the same year, but none of this edition, which is presumed to have priority. Provenance: St John's Seminary, Wonersh.
