Collation: *â￾¸ [quadrato]â￾¶ a-2nâ￾¸ 2o-2pâ￾¶; A-2Tâ￾¸. Colophon on leaf TT7 recto “Venetiis: in aedibus Aldi Romani: impensa, ac studio Ioannis Petri Vallae filii pientiss., mense Decembri 1501”. Very rare first edition. Impressive scientific encyclopedia, the first humanist encyclopedia and the large format book printed by Aldus. Graesse: "Une des plus belles productions des presses Aldines". This work influenced many mathematicians, including Francesco Maurolico, important musicians like Zarlino, Tigrini and Heinrich Glarean, humanists such as Erasmus from Rotterdam and scientists like Nicholas Copernicus. It was also bought and studied by Leonardo da Vinci who used it in his work on the geometry of proportions. Kelley & Popkin: “one of the most important direct sources of Leonardo’s mathematical knowledge.” In the De expetendis et fugiendis rebus, Le cose da perseguire e quelle da evitare, Valla did not just fill out his own notions, derived from personal studies and distributed in systematic treatises, but also included numerous translations from ancient works. The text is subdivided into 49 books: the first volume contains books dedicated to Arithmetic, Music, Geometry, Astronomy and Physics; The second course of Medicine, Grammar, Dialectics, Poetics, Rhetoric, Moral Philosophy, Economics, Politics; Finally, in the last two books, physiology and psychology are examined for the well-being of the body and soul. In the sections related to mathematical disciplines, the author made much use of his Greek manuscript containing works by Archimedes and Eron of Alexandria, then lost, resulting in numerous translations. The first humanistic attestations of the knowledge of some classical authors are found in the work, such as Antinoe's Serene Mathematician. Copernicus, who studied the work in Padua, learned from it the eliocentric ideas of Aristarchus; He has also benefited from several mathematical songs translated by Valla from Greek authors such as Archimedes, Autolico and Ptolemy. In addition, he used the star catalog printed by Valla which differs significantly from that of Ptolemy. Adams V-147; Renouard p. 30/8; Ahmanson-Murphy 48; Sansoviniana 50; Laurenziana 50; Isaac 12771; Scapecchi 50; Kelley & Popkin, p. 45, n. 55. Cfr. E. Rosen, Nicholas Copernicus and Giorgio Valla, «Physis. Rivista internazionale di Storia della Scienza» 23, 1981, pp. 449-457.
