Valerie Thornton RE (British, 1931-1991) San Salvatore, Spoleto signed and dated "VT '85" lower right oil on canvas h:91 w:61 cm Other Notes: Works from the Collection of Valerie Thornton (1931-1991) and Michael Chase (1915-2001) Valerie Thornton was born in London and evacuated to Canada during the war. She returned to London in 1944 and studied at the Byam Shaw School of Art in 1949 and then the Regent Street Polytechnic from 1950 until 1953. In 1952, she attended a photographic exhibition on early architecture, old buildings and walls, facades and church interiors. In the words of her husband, Michael Chase 'this was a revelation to her consciousness and lit for her a future path that never faded.' In 1955, she succeeded Howard Hodgkin as assistant art teacher at Charterhouse and in 1965, she became a founding member of the Print Makers Council. She met Michael Chase when he was at the Zwemmer Gallery in London and they married in 1966. Chase was an eminent artist and director of the Minories Gallery in Colchester. They moved to Clare Hall, Cambridge in 1966. As well as being prolific artists, they were both very interested in encouraging young artists, as well as collecting art works from established artists - many of whom they knew personally. They amassed an extensive collection between them, now largely dispersed to private collectors, galleries and museums.
