VACLAV BROZIK (1851–1901) Master Jan Hus at the Council of Constance Starting price: 1 200 000 CZK (44 444 EUR) Hammer price: 2 600 000 CZK (96 296 EUR) Description dimensions: 100 x 153 cm (h x w) period: Before 1883, Bohemia Oil on canvas, signed "V. Brožík" on bottom right. Several labels with the mark and seal of Brožík's French estate on the back. Originally in the collection of Charles Sedelmeyer, the artist's father-in-law. One of many studies created for Brožík's eponymous large canvas (500 x 730 cm). The painting on offer has the identical composition of the final large version cited above, only at a smaller scale. "The impressiveness of the presented multi-figural composition, which Brožík painted with bold, broad brushstrokes, rest in the painter's ability to characterize faces. The austere face of Master Jan Hus, with this expression of his firm conviction to tell the truth, is gripping. Equally enchanting is the Rembrandt-like use of dark and light of the scene." Quoted from an assessment by PhDr. Naděžda Blažíčková-Horová. Published in: Naděžda Blažíčková-Horová: Václav Brožík 1851-1901; Praha 2003, no. 101.
