A very delicate watercolor based on a work by Pietro Perugino; a panel with the same name is in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. An artist of the High Renaissance, Perugino is also known as the teacher and predecessor of Raphael and is admired by the Nazarene artists and Pre-Raphaelites of the 19th century. His portraits are imbued with the classic formal ideal of sweet Umbrian emotion and harmonious color; the colors share a golden tone, with soft gradations rounding out the sfumato.
