UNIVERSITY STATUTES. Manuscript on paper, n.d. [mid-17th C], a composite volume, transcripts of a number of texts, statutes and charters relating to the universities of Cambridge and St Andrews, and also of 'The answere of Thomas Earle of Stafford' to the charge of high treason, in Latin and English, in four neat contemporary hands, approx 70 leaves, folio (the texts individually paginated) , plus blanks, contemporary limp vellum wallet binding with tawed tie fastening, a paper label on spine numbered '10' (some losses). Provenance : the presence of both the statutes of Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, and an annotation at the foot of the last text 'Ex T. S.S. C.' indicates an early connection with that college; J.M.B. Crawford, Middle Temple (19th-century ownership stamp); 'Phillipps Collection, no number' (20th-century pencil annotation); Alan G. Thomas, catalogue 33 (1975)

The texts comprise: (i) 'Ane Act of Parliament Made 4 Augusti 1621 Confirming the Old fundationes of the Colledges w[ith]in the University in St Andrews and Ordaining the Masters to conforme themselves therto' (ff.1-2); (ii) The statutes of the faculty of theology at St Andrews, 1560 ('Sequuntur statuta facultatis Theologica in universitate Sti Andreae'), (ff.7-8) (iii) 'The new fundatione and erectione of the haill thrie colledges w[ith]in the citie of St Andrewes confirmed in parliament Anno 1579' (ff.9-14) (iv) 'The first fundatione and erectione of St Salvators colledge within the citie of St Andreis' (ff.15-20) (v) Statutes of the University of Cambridge, as confirmed by a letter of Elizabeth I to the Chancellor, Masters and Scholars, 25 September 1570 (ff.21-35) (vi) Statutes of Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge (ff.36-48) (vii) 'The answere of Thomas Earle of Strafford aswell to the Seven articles of the Commons assembled in parliament first exhibited against him in maintenance of their accusation of high treasone, as also the furder impeachment of the s[ai]d Earle by the s[ai]d Commons assembled in parliament conteined in eight and twentie Articles' (ff.51-72) (2)
