Beschreibung:

Nathaniel Lyon (1818-1861), oval image 5 x 7 in. framed to 13 x 15 in. Lyon was born in Connecticut and graduated from USMA in 1841. He served in the Seminole Wars, then in the Mexican War, earning brevets for gallantry at Contreras and Churubusco. During the Kansas-Nebraska debates, Lyon decided he could no longer support the Democrats, and instead supported African Americans and abolition (later the Republican party). Early in the war he was commissioned Brig. General, serving in the western theater. In early August he decided to attack Confederate troops at Dug Springs near Springfield, having decided retreat was more dangerous than a battle. Early in the fight his horse was killed and he was slightly wounded in the head and leg. He found another horse and rode to the front to rally his men when he was shot in the chest and killed instantly. Condition: Not removed from frame, but appears to be in very good condition.
