Sir Henry Mechan (1856-1943) was a native of Glasgow. He worked as an engineer and was a champion of public health education. He served in WWI as a Captain in the Renfrewshire Volunteer Battalion. He founded the Public Health Dept. at the University of Glasgow in 1923. In 1929 he was appointed the Lord Lieutenant of Renfrewshire. The uniforms in this archive include Sir Henry's complete Lord Lieutenant's dress uniform, a scarlet wool tunic with dark blue facings and white piping. Collar and cuffs are trimmed in silver braid. The garment is complete with silver cord shoulder knots with the badge of rank and king's crown silver buttons. The tailor's label on the interior is named to the owner and dated "Oct. 1929." Headgear and accessories consist of a black beaver felt chapeau with silver cord and white plume with case, a blue and red visor cap, a silver brocade sword belt and buckle, white kid gloves and black dress shoes Also included is a pair of black wool trousers with red strips. A service dress tunic of khaki wool with Major's rank, silver buttons and a four place ribbon bar. A small lot of research document on Sir Henry's life are also included. Condition: Good condition, some moderate moth tracking on the red tunic, all other items show very little age or wear.
