Typed Manuscript Signed (“Gelett Burgess”), 27 pp, 4to, n.p., 1922, with annotations by Burgess and another, being the lyrics only to the stage musical “The Purple Cow” by Gelett Burgess and Carolyn Wells, stapled in brown wraps with typed label to upper cover, leaves creased, worn, chipped at edges, tape repair to verso of title-page, covers with wear and cuts at edges. Though Burgess was a popular and prolific poet during his day, today he is best remembered for having composed the ditty, “The Purple Cow”: “I never saw a purple cow / I never hope to see one; / But I can tell you, anyhow, / I’d rather see than be one.” Nearly thirty years after the original publication of the poem, Burgess and juvenile fiction author Carolyn Wells wrote a musical inspired by his poem, the lyrics for which are present in this manuscript. On the title page, Burgess has added the following: “Opened in Washington DC and played 2 weeks in Pittsburgh—[?] of Musical Comedy League.” Provenance: From the collection of M.B. Goldstone.
