London: printed by Johnson, Riddle, & Co., Ltd. and published by The Parliamentary Recruiting Committee as poster no. 20., 1914. Lord Roberts (1832-1914), was a decorated British soldier with over fifty years of service, including his positions as combat leader in the Second Afghan and South African Wars and commander in chief of the British Army. In advance of the First World War, Roberts was an avowed proponent of compulsory military service. Early in 1914, however, he contracted pneumonia and would die later that year. Following his death, his service and loyalty were used as an example for prospective British Army recruits.
