Title: Two scrapbook volumes relating to horse racing at Agua Caliente racetrack Author: ** Place: [Tijuana, Mexico] Publisher: Date: [c.1930’s] Description: Approximately 150 leaves, containing numerous affixed clippings from newspapers, periodicals, race programs and other sources; plus approximately 227 original photos (silver-print and/or gelatin), nearly all of which have been trimmed and/or cut into various shapes and sizes, match that of the horse and/or the jockey, etc. (pictured), together with the paper clippings displayed into various tribute montages as a presentation in text and images of both individual horses, jockeys, trainers, owners, etc. and of the racing events themselves. Many articles from "Galloping Jo's" (Jo Grossman) column. Album binders, 11x8½, half red morocco and black cloth, paper spine labels. Interesting scrapbook put together by an unidentified fan in tribute to the historic and great Agua Caliente racetrack in Tijuana, Mexico, which was one of the most famous racetracks during the 1930’s. Includes tribute pages for horses Sun Beau (who held the American record for money won until Sea Biscuit broke the record in 1939), Mike Hall (at one time the greatest money horse in the history of the U.S. turf), Plucky Play (a Chicago racing sensation of the early 1930’s), Sandy Ford (who was among America’s 30 leading money winners), Lady Broadcast, Challenger II and many others. Also, this is the place where jockeys George Woolf, Eddie Arcaro, and Bill (Willy) Shoemaker started, as did trainer Charlie Whittingham and racing official Marshall Cassidy. Racing fans saw the first starting gates here, the first jockey safety helmets, and bet their first quinellas, exactas, daily doubles, and Pick Sixes at Caliente, and could also do it on Sundays, when racing was prohibited in America. Caliente was the place where the newest innovations in racing could be tested, many of which are currently being used at racetracks all over the world, cementing this racetrack’s significant role in the development of the sport of Thoroughbred racing. All text present in English. Lot Amendments Condition: Mild rubbing and edge wear to albums; leaves loosely laid inside the first volume (which is thicker containing the bulk of the photos, etc.); occasional fading and rubs to photos, short tears to leaf edges; other light wear; else very good overall. Item number: 165477
