Beschreibung:

TWO OFFICERS' SWORDS OF THE ROYAL NAVY First half of the 19th Century The first of 1805 pattern, with straight fullered blade, as for infantry officers' 1796 pattern, with remains of blued and gilt decoration including 'GR' cypher, crown above the royal arms, anchor and trophy (tip of blade now slightly rounded), brass (originally gilt) regulation stirrup hilt of modest quality, the langets bearing the fouled anchor without crown, wire-bound ivory grip (slightly chipped near pommel), backstrap incorporating lion's head pommel, and black leather scabbard (possibly associated) with gilt-copper mounts generally as for 1796 infantry officer's pattern, the reverse of the locket (lacking its suspension-ring) with later signature 'G. Banks /Plymouth/Dock'; the second circa 1832-46, by W Story, 62 Fleet St, London, with slightly curved pipe-backed blade (stained and pitted) bearing traces of finely-etched decoration, and gilt-brass guard of 1827 pattern with hinged flap and lion's-head pommel, in black leather scabbard with gilt-metal mounts (the middle-band probably a later addition) 32in. (81.2cm.), and 31in. (78.7cm.) blades (2)
