Beschreibung:

Two large miniatures with the Virgin and Child seated in a walled garden and in a hilly landscape, adored by angels, both on leaves from an illuminated Book of Hours, in Latin, on parchment [Central France (probably Bourges), c. 1480-90] Single leaf, with 2 half-page arch-topped miniatures, each approximately 85mm. high: (a) the Virgin seated before an ornamental wall with carved human faces, holding the Christ Child as angels adore him (accompanying the Salve regina); (b) the Virgin seated under a tree and before a hilly landscape, again holding the Child as angels adore (accompanying the Ave regina caelorum; above 15 and 14 lines of lettre bâtarde respectively, with initials in liquid gold on red and brown grounds, folio no. 97 in later hand, excellent condition, 167mm. by 105mm. This miniature is a good example of the work of the workshop of Jean Colombe one of the most influential artists working in Bourges in the late fifteenth century. The tall, narrow layout of this manuscript is highly unusual and the unusual subjects of the miniatures suggests that the parent volume was a luxuriously illuminated manuscript. Other leaves from the same parent codex have appeared in Sothebys, 2 July 2013, lot 17, 7 July 2015, lot 48, and 23 May 2017, lot 30.
